Amazon Error 8016: Variation data is incomplete
Error 8016 means Amazon could not build the parent/child relationship from the data in your submission. The usual problem is a missing or inconsistent variation theme, or a child row without the attributes required by that theme.
The product data provided was insufficient for creating a variation (parent/child) relationship for SKU: [SKU]. Ensure that the parent and child share the same variation theme and that there is a submission for variation theme attributes. What Amazon is telling you
Amazon received rows that look like a variation family, but it cannot connect them into one valid family. A parent row groups the products; each child row is the buyable SKU. The parent and every child must use the same variation theme supported for that product type.
Template headers differ by marketplace and category. Read the Data Definitions tab in the exact template you downloaded instead of copying headers from an older file.
Why this happens
- The parent and child rows use different variation_theme values.
- A child is missing a theme attribute such as size_name or color_name.
- parent_sku, parentage, or relationship_type is blank or points to the wrong SKU.
- The chosen variation theme is not valid for the product type in that template.
What to check first
Use one supported theme on the parent and all children.
Each child must point to the exact SKU used on the parent row.
Mark the grouping row as parent and the buyable rows as child; use the relationship value specified by the template.
Every child needs the values named by the theme, for example both size and color for a size/color theme.
Rebuild the variation family in this order
- Download a fresh category template and confirm the variation theme is available for the product type.
- Complete the parent row first. Give it a unique parent SKU and set the supported variation theme.
- For every child row, set the same variation theme, point parent_sku to the parent, and complete the relationship fields.
- Fill every child attribute required by the theme. Child values must be specific; do not put a size range on the parent and leave child sizes blank.
- Upload the corrected file and inspect the new processing report by SKU.
Example: SizeColor family
- Parent: variation_theme = SizeColor; no sellable price or quantity.
- Child SMALL-BLACK: size_name = Small; color_name = Black; parent_sku = the parent SKU.
- Child LARGE-BLACK: size_name = Large; color_name = Black; parent_sku = the same parent SKU.
Before you upload again
- All rows use the same supported theme.
- Every child points to one parent SKU.
- Every child has all theme-specific attributes.
- The file is based on the latest template for the product type.
Questions sellers ask
- Can the parent SKU have a price or quantity?
- The parent is a non-buyable grouping row. Put offer data on the child SKUs and follow the instructions in your category template for fields that must remain blank on the parent.
- Why does 8016 remain when the variation theme looks correct?
- Check the child attributes named by the theme, the exact parent_sku value, and whether the theme is valid for that product type. An old or wrong template can also make a correct-looking file fail.
